Two quarter sequence. The historical fate of Socrates' proposal that only reason can provide answers to questions of what to believe and how to act. The fate of reason in cultural contexts including medieval Christian, Islamic, and Jewish. Themes include free will, personal identity, the authority of morality, and the tension between reason as power for improving life and as insufficient means for reaching important truths. 1st qtr of two qtr sequence;.
